Common high-risk foods and ingredients
- Chocolate and cocoa
- Xylitol in gum, candy, baked goods, toothpaste, and some nut butters
- Grapes and raisins
- Alcohol and unbaked yeast dough
- Coffee, tea, energy products, and caffeine
- Onions, garlic, chives, and related concentrated products
- Macadamia nuts
- Moldy food and trash
Also prevent physical hazards
Cooked bones, skewers, corn cobs, wrappers, string, and large fruit pits can cause choking, injury, or intestinal blockage even when the food itself is not toxic.
After an exposure
- Remove access without putting yourself at risk.
- Save packaging and estimate amount and time.
- Know the dog’s weight.
