How to Introduce a Dog to Puzzle Toys

Choose a beginner task

Use a stable toy with large, easy-to-move parts or scatter food in a folded towel under supervision. The dog should succeed within seconds at first.

Make the first session short

1. Let the dog inspect the toy.
2. Place visible food beside and on top of it.
3. Move one simple part to reveal food.
4. End after a few successes.

Watch frustration

Frantic biting, barking, abandoning the task, or guarding can mean the puzzle is too difficult or not a good fit. Reduce difficulty instead of withholding the meal until the dog solves it.

Safety rules

• Supervise until you know how the dog uses the item
• Use pieces too large to swallow
• Inspect for cracks and sharp edges
• Wash according to directions
• Count removable parts before and after use

Rotate activities

Puzzles are one enrichment option, not a substitute for walks, social contact, training, chewing, sniffing, and rest.
